Public Disputes: Situation Assessment and Negotiation Skills

A one-day workshop to improve one-on-one and small group negotiations and conflict management. The material is designed for officials whose functions include any of the following:

  • Direct citizen service
  • Employee supervision
  • Inter-departmental coordination of activities

Workshop objectives:

  • Understand the sources of conflict
  • Analyze conflicts effectively
  • Improve preparation for negotiation
  • Enhance negotiation skills
  • Understand the different roles of impartial third parties in public disputes
  • Learn about mediation and facilitation resources in North Carolina

Teaching will be conducted through brief lectures, discussion, individual exercises and small group role-plays. The workshop will conclude with a preview of Workshop II.
